Reflexivity and Certified Crop Advisors’ Knowledge Paradigms as Related to Pesticide Resistance Management

A major unintended risk of modern US agricultural use of pesticides has been pesticide resistance—a situation in which overuse of simplified pesticide-reliant pest management practices results in the loss of pesticide efficacy and results in yield declines, labor and time costs, environmental hazards, and other negative consequences. It has been posited that addressing pesticide resistance will necessitate a transformation in how agriculture is done, including major structural diversification of management practices and the involvement of a broad community of diverse stakeholders co-producing knowledge. Crop advisors—those agronomists providing paid-for agronomic advice to farmers independently or as part of a larger corporation—are one group has a high potential impact on what pesticide resistance management strategies and farmers’ information networks. However, there is minimal research on how crop advisors approach the topic of pesticide resistance with their customers, including the reductionist or reflexive approaches they may draw on in their information provisioning. We explore this topic through a series of regional focus groups intended to uncover crop advisors’ perspectives on structural barriers to resistance management and use of reflexivity in their application of reductionist or iterative knowledge provisioning paradigms. We find that crop advisors recognize complex structural barriers to effective pesticide resistance management; while modern reductionist approaches were evident in attempts to overcome these barriers, crop advisors also engaged in reflexivity and drew on iterative forms of knowledge provisioning, particularly when unaffiliated with an agrichemical company and when working with fewer customers and higher value specialty crops. Additionally, those crop advisors applying a reductionist advising approach did not necessarily adhere to a modernist ideology; rather, we found that most crop advisors were reflexively critical of this approach and preferred a more iterative format but were constrained from taking action on this preference due to structures based in the capitalist industrialized US agricultural system. We propose that reflexivity is present but insufficient to alter patterns of pesticide resistance information and management without significant structural alterations.

Engineering multi-degrading bacterial communities to bioremediate soils contaminated with pesticides residues

Parallel to the important use of pesticides in conventional agriculture there is a growing interest for green technologies to clear contaminated soil from pesticides and their degradation products. Bioaugmentation i. e. the inoculation of degrading micro-organisms in polluted soil, is a promising method still in needs of further developments. Specifically, improvements in the understanding of how degrading microorganisms must overcome abiotic filters and interact with the autochthonous microbial communities are needed in order to efficiently design bioremediation strategies. Here we designed a protocol aiming at studying the degradation of two herbicides, glyphosate (GLY) and isoproturon (IPU), via experimental modifications of two source bacterial communities. We used statistical methods stemming from genomic prediction to link community composition to herbicides degradation potentials. Our approach proved to be efficient with correlation estimates over 0.8 - between model predictions and measured pesticide degradation values. Multi-degrading bacterial communities were obtained by coalescing bacterial communities with high GLY or IPU degradation ability based on their community-level properties. Finally, we evaluated the efficiency of constructed multi-degrading communities to remove pesticide contamination in a different soil. While results are less clear in the case of GLY, we showed an efficient transfer of degrading capacities towards the receiving soil even at relatively low inoculation levels in the case of IPU. Altogether, we developed an innovative protocol for building multi-degrading simplified bacterial communities with the help of genomic prediction tools and coalescence, and proved their efficiency in a contaminated soil.

Exploring the effects of the acaricide cyflumetofen on the vital organs of the honey bee Apis mellifera (Hymenoptera: Apidae) workers

Bees are important for maintaining ecosystems, pollinating crops and producing marketable products. In recent years, a decline in bee populations has been reported, with multifactorial causes, including the intensification of pesticide use in agriculture. Among pesticides, cyflumetofen is an insecticide and acaricide used in apple, coffee and citrus crops, whose main pollinator is the honey bee Apis mellifera. Therefore, this bee is a potential target of cyflumetofen during foraging. This study evaluated the histopathological and cytological damage in the midgut, hypopharyngeal glands and fat body of A. mellifera workers exposed to LC50 of cyflumetofen. The midgut epithelium of exposed bees presented cytoplasmic vacuolization, release of vesicles and cell fragments, which indicate autophagy, increased production of digestive enzymes and cell death, respectively. The cytological analysis of the midgut revealed the dilation of the basal labyrinth and the presence of spherocrystals in the digestive cells. The hypopharyngeal glands produced greater amounts of secretion in treated bees, whereas no changes were observed in the fat body. The results indicate that acute exposure to cyflumetofen negatively affect A. mellifera, causing damage to the midgut and changes in the hypopharyngeal glands, which may compromise the survival and foraging of this pollinator.

Ambient long-term exposure to organophosphorus pesticides and the human gut microbiome: an observational study

BackgroundOrganophosphorus pesticides (OP) have been associated with various human health conditions. Animal experiments and in-vitro models suggested that OP may also affect the gut microbiota. We examined associations between ambient chronic exposure to OP and gut microbial changes in humans.MethodsWe recruited 190 participants from a community-based epidemiologic study of Parkinson’s disease living in a region known for heavy agricultural pesticide use in California. Of these, 61% of participants had Parkinson’s disease and their mean age was 72 years. Microbiome and predicted metagenome data were generated by 16S rRNA gene sequencing of fecal samples. Ambient long-term OP exposures were assessed using pesticide application records combined with residential addresses in a geographic information system. We examined gut microbiome differences due to OP exposures, specifically differences in microbial diversity based on the Shannon index and Bray–Curtis dissimilarities, and differential taxa abundance and predicted Metacyc pathway expression relying on regression models and adjusting for potential confounders.ResultsOP exposure was not associated with alpha or beta diversity of the gut microbiome. However, the predicted metagenome was sparser and less evenly expressed among those highly exposed to OP (p = 0.04). Additionally, we found that the abundance of two bacterial families, 22 genera, and the predicted expression of 34 Metacyc pathways were associated with long-term OP exposure. These pathways included perturbed processes related to cellular respiration, increased biosynthesis and degradation of compounds related to bacterial wall structure, increased biosynthesis of RNA/DNA precursors, and decreased synthesis of Vitamin B1 and B6.ConclusionIn support of previous animal studies and in-vitro findings, our results suggest that ambient chronic OP pesticide exposure alters gut microbiome composition and its predicted metabolism in humans.

Novel antifungals and treatment approaches to tackle resistance and improve outcomes of invasive fungal disease.

SUMMARYFungal infections are on the rise, driven by a growing population at risk and climate change. Currently available antifungals include only five classes, and their utility and efficacy in antifungal treatment are limited by one or more of innate or acquired resistance in some fungi, poor penetration into "sequestered" sites, and agent-specific side effect which require frequent patient reassessment and monitoring. Agents with novel mechanisms, favorable pharmacokinetic (PK) profiles including good oral bioavailability, and fungicidal mechanism(s) are urgently needed. Here, we provide a comprehensive review of novel antifungal agents, with both improved known mechanisms of actions and new antifungal classes, currently in clinical development for treating invasive yeast, mold (filamentous fungi), Pneumocystis jirovecii infections, and dimorphic fungi (endemic mycoses). We further focus on inhaled antifungals and the role of immunotherapy in tackling fungal infections, and the specific PK/pharmacodynamic profiles, tissue distributions as well as drug-drug interactions of novel antifungals. Finally, we review antifungal resistance mechanisms, the role of use of antifungal pesticides in agriculture as drivers of drug resistance, and detail detection methods for antifungal resistance.

Knowledge and perception of cereal farmers and extension agents on fungicide use in Northern Ghana.

Agricultural pesticide use in sub-Saharan Africa has doubled over the past three decades; with a greater relative increase for fungicides. As pesticide inputs continues to rise, so does the potential for the development of resistance. Here, we report on a survey conducted to understand pesticide resistance awareness, pesticide use knowledge and practices of growers and agricultural extension officers (AEOs) in the cereals growing-belt of Northern Ghana, with emphasis on fungicides. The results may inform development of strategies for improving pesticide literacy including resistance awareness, extension services, and crop protection outcomes. The survey revealed a low level of pesticide use knowledge for AEOs and growers. This was more so for growers with low education, predominantly women. Education level (and indirectly gender) influenced perceived effectiveness of fungicides and levels of adoption of cultural and agrochemical best practices. Only 28% of growers and 11% of AEOs practice crop and fungicide rotations, respectively. More than half (53%) of the respondents indicated that fungicides used in Northern Ghana are not effective. Given the low level of pesticide literacy of AEOs and growers, training programs on best practice on the use of pesticides, with targeted initiatives for female growers would improve crop protection outcomes, and safety. The limited adoptions of crop rotation and repeated use of fungicides with the same active ingredients, along with >50% of respondents reporting 'fungicides not working' suggest the potential presence of fungicide resistance cases in growers' fields in the Northern region of Ghana. Further work is needed to determine the incidence of resistance in the region. It is recommended that a key policy priority should focus on understanding broader agrochemical use practices, crop losses and household-level food security in the presence of resistance risks. The Effect of Pesticides on Public Health: A Review

Due to the widespread use of pesticides in agriculture and other contexts, human exposure to them persists. Despite premarket animal testing, epidemiologic studies show that current exposures are linked to dangers to the well-being of people. Within this analysis, we outline the current pathways for pesticide exposure and provide an overview and assessment of the epidemiologic research on adult neurotoxicity and carcinogenicity associated with pesticides. Assessing the hazards that pesticides bring to human health will be improved by a deeper comprehension of exposure patterns, the underlying diversity among people, and the connections between animals' toxicological data and their effects on human health. Public health policymakers will be able to evaluate the risks of exposure to pesticides to human health more precisely if epidemiological studies are improved and combined with toxicology data.

Spatial modeling tool to assess and rank peri-urban land use in an agricultural region of the Midwestern United States

America is the continent with the largest area of genetically modified crops, the United States being the leading producer. Numerous studies show a panorama of potential exposure from agricultural pesticide use for this types of crops near to cities across a vast region of the United States. For the reasons mentioned above, we have chosen to investigate the following issues in this study: How does the implementation of an indexbased spatial modeling tool effectively rank the proximity of peri-urban crops, and what factors impact its effectiveness across diverse peri-urban agricultural landscapes? To address these questions, the research employs the Crop Proximity Index (CPI) model in various cities across the Midwest region of the United States. Six hundred and seventy cities in the state of Iowa were selected, and their peripheries were analysed using weighted perimeter rings, from 0 to 2000 m. The Crop Proximity Index was used to simulate a model of proximity to crops by considering the spatial quantification occupied by agriculture, forest cover, shrubs, pastures and buffer zones. This index varies from 0 to 1 and serves to rank the cities under study. It was estimated that a Crop Proximity Index equal to or >0.8 is a good approximation to a model with less proximity of crops and that only 62 cities (9%) meet this condition. Some 457 cities (68%) have CPIs equal to or <0.5 due to the large areas of crops and the low peripheral forest levels. The CPI is an index that makes it possible to obtain vital exploratory data in order to focus on future research that would determine how the proximity of agro-industrial crops has possible negative consequences for the environment and human health in greater detail.

Enhancing the Biosorption Potential of Pichia kluyveri FM012 for 4-Bromophenols

AbstractThe use of toxic and persistent pesticides in agriculture results in serious and lasting environmental impacts. Although traditional methods, such as physical and chemical reclamation, yield the best results, treating these contaminants requires a high cost and expertise. Therefore, this study focuses on bioremediation recovery, which is more efficient, economical, and safer for removal. In this case, the newly isolated potential of Pichia kluyveri FM012 in degrading 4-bromophenol was investigated. The impact of optimized parameters such as agitation, pH, nitrogen, and carbon source were also studied. After extensive testing, the best optimal degradation occurred at pH 5 with a stirrer speed of 150 rpm. Glucose and yeast performed the best compared to other carbon and nitrogen sources. The Langmuir model predicted the maximum biosorption capacity (qm = 38.46 mg/g biomass), but the Freundlich model provided a better value of R2 = 0.999. The pseudo-second-order kinetic model was fitting for the study of biosorption kinetics. The FTIR spectrum revealed the presence of asymmetric and symmetric vibrations of the aromatic ring and was assigned to C = C or C = O. Fungi showed biosorption ability across broad functional groups. These results provide interesting information about the ability of Pichia kluyveri FM012 and its potential applications for remediating resistant pesticides.

Sustainable basmati rice yield and quality enhancement through long-term organic nutrient management in the Indo-Gangetic Plains

Context or problemThe extensive use of chemical fertilizers and pesticides in modern agriculture, particularly since the green revolution, has led to profound consequences for agricultural ecosystems. This approach, while initially boosting yields, has disrupted soil health, biodiversity, and environmental balance. Moreover, it contributes silently to global climate change by releasing greenhouse gases. These challenges underscore the urgent need for a shift towards sustainable agricultural practices to safeguard soil health, biodiversity, and human nutrition while mitigating the impacts of climate change. Objective or research questionThe primary objective of this study is to assess the impact of the long-term (seventeen years) application of organic nutrient management on the physicochemical properties of basmati rice soil and its nutritional quality. The study aims to understand the effectiveness of different organic nutrient management practices in mitigating the negative consequences associated with conventional agricultural practices. MethodsThe experiment used a strip-plot design with three replications, assigning two cropping systems (basmati rice-wheat-green gram and basmati rice-wheat-sesbania) to vertical strips. Seven nutrient management practices, including control, farmyard manure (FYM), vermicompost, farmyard manure + crop residues, vermicompost + crop residues, farmyard manure + crop residues + biofertilizers, and vermicompost + crop residues + biofertilizers [nitrogen-fixing Azospirillum, phosphorus-solubilizing bacteria (PSB), potassium-solubilizing bacteria (KSB), and a cellulolytic culture (Aspergillus awamori, Trichoderma viride, Phanerochaete chrysosporium, and Aspergillus wululens)] were applied to the horizontal strips. ResultsThe findings show that the cropping system with sesbania green manure significantly improved soil physicochemical attributes, nutritional content, and basmati rice yield compared to the green gram-based system. Continued application of organic manures, crop residues, and biofertilizers notably enhanced soil fertility, grain quality, and basmati rice productivity. The combined use of vermicompost, wheat residue, biofertilizers, and sesbania green manure treatment increased organic carbon content by 78.7% over the control, and soil available nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium by 38.3–54.9%, 57.6–143.8%, and 27.9–64.1%, respectively. Additionally, it augmented diethylenetriamine pentaacetic acid extractable iron, zinc, manganese, and copper content by up to 44.2%, 28.5%, 57.9%, and 71.0%, respectively. Co-application of the above organic sources also significantly enhanced grain and straw yields by 74.5–80.1% and 46.1–50.0%, respectively, compared to the control. ConclusionsEnhancing Basmati rice yield and quality in the Indo-Gangetic Plains can be sustainably achieved through sesbania green manuring and organic practices. Positive correlations with key soil parameters emphasize the significance of organic farming for long-term sustainability. Implications and significanceThe study suggests that adopting organic practices, including sesbania green manuring and combining organic inputs, can alleviate the adverse effects of conventional farming on soil health, biodiversity, and climate change. This aligns with the broader goal of establishing sustainable production and consumption in basmati rice-based cropping systems.

Assessing the environmental pesticides impact of river sediments from a basin in western Mexico: Spatiotemporal distribution, risk assessment of aquatic invertebrates and pesticides prioritization

The intensive use of pesticides in Mexican agriculture has contributed significantly to the increase in food production, but at the same time represents potential risk to biota. This situation creates a dilemma between the need to increase food production and the preservation of the environment and human health. Aquatic invertebrates play a vital role in the balance of aquatic ecosystems but are sensitive to pesticides contamination. The sensitivity of aquatic invertebrates to pesticides contamination has led them to be used to assess the potential impact of this contamination on aquatic ecosystems. In the present study, conducted in the Ayuquila-Armería basin, the following aims were achieved: 1) quantifying the presence of 20 pesticides in river sediments, 2) assessing the spatiotemporal distribution of pesticides in river sediments, 3) determining the potential risk to aquatic invertebrates, and 4) prioritizing pesticides based on their potential risk. Twelve pesticides were consistently quantified in 192 river sediments samples. The pesticides with the highest concentrations were ametrine, malathion and picloram. The temporal analysis showed seasonality in pesticide concentrations, with higher detection frequencies during the wet season. The risk assessment showed that aquatic invertebrates may be affected by the concentrations of carbofuran, malathion, diazinon and ametrine. Pesticides prioritization identified ametrine, carbofuran, and diazinon as major concerns based on the methodology that considers the Frequency and Extent of Exceedance. This study provides valuable insights into the current pesticides scenario in the Ayuquila-Armería River sediments. The findings underscore the need for sustainable alternatives to mitigate the ecological risks associated with pesticides contamination in this aquatic ecosystem.

The impact of climate change on economic growth: A study of ASEAN countries

Climate change is an urgent and worldwide concern that presents substantial risks to a range of industries, such as agriculture, water resources, and economic growth. The purpose of this research is to assess how climate change has affected the economic expansion of ASEAN nations. Land pollution, sea level rise, and carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions are utilized to quantify climate change. Empirically investigating this issue, the Fixed Effects Generalized Least Squares (FGLS) method is utilized in conjunction with panel data spanning the years 1990 to 2018. The findings from the FGLS model estimation suggest that climate change exerts a varied influence on the economic growth of ASEAN member states. More precisely, total pesticide use in agriculture has a positive impact on economic development, whereas CO2 emissions have a detrimental effect. Moreover, economic growth is positively impacted by foreign direct investment, trade openness, and institutional stability. To stimulate economic expansion and bolster growth drivers, ASEAN nations must adopt more robust measures to deal with climate change.

Combined effects of polyethylene microplastics and carbendazim on Eisenia fetida: A comprehensive ecotoxicological study

Microplastic (MP) pollution is becoming an emerging environmental concern across aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems. Plastic mulching and the use of pesticides in agriculture can lead to microplastics and agrochemicals in soil, which can result in unintended exposure to non-target organisms. The combined toxicity of multiple stressors represents a significant paradigm shift within the field of ecotoxicology, and its exploration within terrestrial ecosystems involving microplastics is still relatively limited. The present study investigated the combined effects of polyethylene MP (PE-MP) and the agrochemical carbendazim (CBZ) on the earthworm Eisenia fetida at different biological levels of organization. While E. fetida survival and reproduction did not exhibit significant effects following PE-MP treatment, there was a reduction in cocoon and hatchling numbers. Notably, prolonged exposure revealed delayed toxicity, leading to substantial growth impairment. Exposure to CBZ led to significant alterations in the endpoints mentioned above. While there was a decrease in cocoon and hatchling numbers, the combined treatment did not yield significant effects on earthworm reproduction except at higher concentrations. However, lower concentrations of PE-MP alongside CBZ induced a noteworthy decline in biomass content, signifying a form of potentiation interaction. In addition, concurrent exposure led to synergistic effects, from oxidative stress to modifications in vital organs such as the body wall, intestines, and reproductive structures (spermathecae, seminal vesicles, and ovarian follicles). The comparison of multiple endpoints revealed that seminal vesicles and ovarian follicles were the primary targets during the combined exposure. The research findings suggest that there are variable and complex responses to microplastic toxicity in terrestrial ecosystems, especially when combined with other chemical stressors like agrochemicals. Despite these difficulties, the study implies that microplastics can alter earthworms' responses to agrochemical exposure, posing potential ecotoxicological risks to soil fauna.

Impact of Washing and Fermentation on the Concentration of Pesticide Residues in Nigerian Staple Foods By IJISRT

The use of pesticides in agriculture is linked to accumulation of toxic compounds in the soil, in food, and its accumulation in animal and human tissues. Pesticide residues are deposits of pesticides that remain on or in agricultural produce after harvest or during storage. This work examined the effects various processing steps on the levels of methoxychlor, dieldrin, p,p’-DDE and α- chlordane residues in common staples; maize, rice, beans and cassava. The treatments administered included cold water washing, hot water washing, and fermentation for 3 and 5 days. The Quick, Effective, Cheap, Easy, Rugged and Safe (QuEChERS) technique was adopted for extraction of pesticide residues while gas chromatography tandem mass spectrometry was used for quantification of the residues in the samples. The processing steps applied had various effects on the level of residues ranging from - 149% to 100% reduction in level of pesticide; in rice processing, washing with hot water had the greatest impact in reducing methoxychlor (55.5-97.1%) and α- chlordane (95.5%). Fermentation for 5 days had the greatest impact in reducing methoxychlor residue from cassava (13.6-26.3%), while fermentation of maize for 3 or 5 days had similar impact in reduction of the level of methoxychlor (35.5-79.5% and 39.1-78.4% respectively) and α-chlordane (100% and 100% respectively). Hot water washing of beans was most effective in eliminating methoxychlor (98.4%), p,p’-DDE (100%), α-chlordane (100%) and dieldrin (100%). Reduction in hazard index was also observed with processing, as a result of reduction in amount of pesticide going into the diet.

Protection of cowpea seeds and toxicity against cowpea weevils by the essential oils from Lippia alba (verbenaceae) and Schinus terebinthifolius (anacardiaceae)

Alternative methods have been widely studied to mitigate problems arising from the use of pesticides in agriculture. Among them is the use of essential oils to control stored grain pests. In this context, the aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of fumigation of cowpeas with 12 essential oils having different chemical profiles, derived from the germplasm collection of Schinus terebinthifolius and Lippia alba at Rio de Janeiro Federal Rural University. These oils were applied at various concentrations (0.1–1.0 mg/mL of air) against cowpea weevils (Callosobruchus maculatus). The chemotypes evaluated included citral, citral/limonene, carvone/limonene, and linalool from the essential oils of L. alba, as well as α-pinene, sabinene, α-phellandrene/α-pinene, β-pinene/α-pinene, δ-carene/α-pinene, limonene, α-phellandrene/sabinene, and myrcene from the essential oils of S. terebinthifolius. Various aspects of the insects' reproductive cycle were evaluated, including mortality, egg laying, emergence of new adults, emergence rate, and larval hatching, along with grain mass loss. The results indicated life cycle inhibition of all evaluated oils, with the essential oil from the UFRRJ ECB028 (linalool CT) genotype having the lowest LC50 (0.10 mg/mL of air), completely halting the insects’ life cycle and totally preventing seed mass loss. Overall, the results pointed to certain genotypes as promising for the development of technologies aimed at seed protection.

Experimental study on photodegradation and leaching of typical pesticides in greenhouse soil from Shouguang, Shandong Province, East China

BackgroundPesticide use contributes to national food security. The dissipation pathways and degradation mechanisms of pesticides have been widely studied and pesticide residues have remained a focus of public concern. However, studies on the migration and transformation behaviors of pesticide residues in real-world greenhouse soils are insufficient. Therefore, in this study, we collected greenhouse soil from Shouguang, Shandong Province, and investigated the photodegradation and leaching of 17 common pesticides, which leave residues in the soil and are the most frequently used pesticides in Shouguang. The environmental behavior of pesticides in greenhouse soils will provide new information on pesticide residues in the real environment and provide a scientific basis for the prevention and control of pesticide pollution in greenhouse soils.ResultsThe photodegradation of trifloxystrobin followed a first-order kinetic equation, whereas those of emamectin benzoate, chlorantraniliprole, buprofezin, difenoconazole, pyraclostrobin, boscalid, tebuconazole, isoprothiolane, metalaxyl, and oxadixyl followed second-order kinetics. The half-lives of 17 pesticides under light and dark conditions ranged from 2.5–104 (mean: 36.2) and 2.6–110 (mean: 31.4) days, respectively. The half-lives of emamectin benzoate, pyraclostrobin, and metalaxyl in the light were 86.6%, 68.5%, and 94.5% of their half-lives in the dark, respectively. Chlorantraniliprole, metalaxyl, nitenpyram, diethofencarb, acetamiprid, carbendazim, and oxadixyl were leached to ≥ 90% in aqueous solution. Six pesticides, avermectin B1A, emamectin benzoate, trifloxystrobin, difenoconazole, pyraclostrobin, and buprofezin, were difficult to leach from aqueous solutions.ConclusionsThe degradation rate of some pesticides was higher in the light environment than in the dark. The leaching potential of the leachable pesticides was nitenpyram ≫ metalaxyl > acetamiprid > carbendazim > diethofencarb ≈ chlorantraniliprole > isoprothiolane > oxadixyl > boscalid ≈ tebuconazole > hexaconazole. Pesticides that are easy to leach but not easily degraded, such as chlorantraniliprole and metalaxyl, have a high potential risk of groundwater pollution, and additional degradation technologies should be used to reduce their pollution risk. The study of the photodegradation and vertical migration behavior of various pesticides is conducive to providing references for the agricultural use and pollution control of pesticides.

Occurrence and toxicological relevance of pesticides and trace metals in agricultural soils, sediments, and water of the Sogamoso River basin, Colombia

Historical pesticide use in agriculture and trace metal accumulation have long term impact on soil, sediment, and water quality. This research quantifies legacy and current-use pesticides and trace metals, assessing their occurrence and toxicological implications on a watershed scale in the Sogamoso River basin, tributary of the Magdalena River in Colombia. Organochlorine pesticides (22), organophosphates (7), and azole fungicides (5), as well as trace metals cadmium (Cd), chromium (Cr), copper (Cu), mercury (Hg), nickel (Ni), lead (Pb), and zinc (Zn) were analyzed in croplands and along the river. Toxic units (TU) and hazard quotients (HQ) were calculated to assess the mixture toxicity. Organochlorines were detected in 84% of soils, 100% of sediments, and 80% of water samples. Organophosphates were found in 100% of soil and sediment samples, as well as in 70% of water samples. Azole fungicides were present in 79% of soils, 60% of sediments, and in 10% of water samples. Total pesticide concentrations ranged from 214.2 to 8497.7 μg/kg in soils, 569.6–12768.2 μg/kg in sediments, and 0.2–4.1 μg/L in water. In addition, the use of partition coefficient (Kd) and organic carbon fraction (foc) allowed the distribution analysis for most of the pesticides in sediments, suspended particulate matter (SPM), and water systems, but not for soils. Concentrations of trace metals Cu, Zn, Pb, and Zn exceeded international quality guidelines for agricultural soils in 16% of the samples. Furthermore, Cu and Zn concentrations exceeded sediment quality guidelines in 50 and 90% of the samples, respectively. These findings demonstrate the broad distribution of complex mixtures of trace metals, legacy organochlorines, and current-use pesticides across the basin, indicating that conventional agriculture is a significant source of diffuse pollution. Sustainable agricultural practices are needed to mitigate adverse impacts on ecosystems and human health.

Differences Between Farmers and Crop Protection Service Providers in the Use of Pesticides

AbstractEU-wide statistics on the use of pesticides in agriculture are available on the quantities placed on the market, but data on actual use in practice are limited. In this study, comparative data on pesticide use and resistance management were collected for a region with mixed agriculture (arable and animal husbandry) in Austria. Based on individual pesticide records of 30 farmers and 10 service providers who perform plant protection tasks for 30 farms, the average application rates of pesticides, the change of the active substance group as well as the shortfalls and exceedances of the maximum permissible application rate were compared. Most farmers and service providers usually make a well-considered change in the group of active substances to avoid the development of resistance. Exceedances and underdosing of authorised application rates were found for both groups of people, with farmers tending to deviate more often. The applications amounts were largely in compliance with the law, however, in 3.69% of the 2387 evaluated uses of pesticides, the authorised application rate was exceeded. This excess was found somewhat more frequently among farmers than service providers. The application rate excesses can be attributed to technical overruns due to differences between actually farmed and formally declared area, confusion caused by complex application instructions but also by intention. To avoid inadequate information on authorised application rates and to simplify information gathering, the development of databases and apps that take into account not only the indisputably essential aspect of correct registration, but especially the user and user-friendliness, would be of great benefit and value. Packaging sizes adapted to different requirements and farm sizes would also be advantageous. High priority should be given to the technical training of users and sales personnel. This can contribute to higher professionalism in the use of pesticides in terms of compliance and resistance management, but also to the reduction of pesticides.

Heavy Metals in Common Fishes Consumed in Dhaka, a Megacity of Asia: A Probabilistic Carcinogenic and Non-Carcinogenic Health Hazard.

Heavy metal contamination of fish is a serious public health concern worldwide, including in Bangladesh. In this study, six commonly consumed fish species namely Hilsha (Tenualosa ilisha), Kachki (Corica soborna), Punti (Puntitus ticto), Taki (Channa punctatus), Meni (Nandus nandus), and Tengra (Mystus tengara) were analyzed for arsenic (As), cadmium (Cd), lead (Pb), zinc (Zn), copper (Cu), chromium (Cr), manganese (Mn), and nickel (Ni), by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry. The fish samples were collected from wholesale markets in Dhaka city, the main business hub of Bangladesh where the fishes converged from countrywide and are redistributed to the whole city. The metal concentration varied among the studied fish species. Hilsha, the national fish of Bangladesh, contained the highest As among the other fishes of this study, whereas Zn, Cd, Cu, Mn, and Ni were the highest in Kachki, and Pb and Cr were the highest in Tengra. The probable source of metal accumulation in the fish species may be the river or marine water that can be contaminated by industrial waste, pesticide, and/or fertilizer use in agriculture and/or commercial fish feeds. All analyzed fish species showed serious heavy metal pollution, having high average pollution load index (APLI) values (> 1). The estimated daily intake (EDI) values for the metals were lower than the maximum tolerable daily intake (MTDI). The hazard index (HI) for all the fish species was above 1 for adults, showing non-carcinogenic health risks. The targetcarcinogenic risk (TCR) values were below the acceptable limit (10-4) for most of the metals, indicating safe for consumption with respect to the risk of cancer.

Assessing the Public Perceptions of Media Coverage for Pesticides Use in the Agriculture Sector of India

Present research employs a survey method to explore the intricate relationship between media exposures and public perceptions of pesticide use in agriculture. A well-structured Google questionnaire was shared for data collection from the participants belonging to the northern district of Haryana, encompassing Panchkula, Ambala, Yamunanagar, Kurukshetra, Kaithal, and Karnal. A total 350 respondents participated in the online survey. The study reveals that the respondents who perceive media coverage as balanced are more likely to express concerns about pesticide use. The study tries to find out the degree of concern, trust, accuracy, and statistical significance. In terms of the perception influenced by media portrayals on pesticide use, a significant association is observed (Chi-square = 41.029, p &lt; 0.0001). The analysis of media sources accuracy reveals a statistically significant association (Chi-square = 58.156, p &lt; 0.0001). Respondents who perceived media sources as "Very accurate" reported higher levels of concern about pesticide use in agricultural practices, emphasizing the impact of perceived media accuracy on public concerns about pesticide use. The study found a strong link between media influence and the level of concern regarding pesticide use.
